East Texas PFLAG helps keep families together through Education, Support, and Advocacy.  PFLAG stands for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

What Is PFLAG?

"PFLAG" is Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays. We are a national support, education and advocacy  organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) people, their families, friends, and allies. PFLAG now represents over 250,000 members and supporters, with affiliates located in more than 500 communities in the United States and abroad. PFLAG is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization that is not affiliated with any political or religious institution.

The History Behind PFLAG

In 1972, Morton Manford was physically attacked at a gay rights protest demonstration in New York City. Morty's  parents, Jeanne and Jules Manford, saw the attack on a local newscast and witnessed the police's failure to intervene.  Their outrage turned them into activists.

Jeanne Manford later marched with her gay son in New York City's Pride Day Parade, carrying a sign that said, "We  Love Our Gay Children." Afterwards, many gay and lesbian people begged her to talk to their parents. She decided to  begin a support group where parents could meet in a safe and non-judgmental place and begin to understand that  nothing was wrong with their kids.

The first support group met in March, 1973, with 20 people attending. In response to the need, similar groups sprang  up around the country and in 1979, the handful of support groups around the country met in Washington, D.C. to  coincide with the first national march for gay rights. Two years, later, PFLAG was officially formed.

Being transgender or knowing someone who is can make you feel all alone, with no one to talk to who really understands. You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, confusion, and most of all, isolation. And real life support groups are nearly impossible to find.

That’s why Tyler Transgender Support started. We are a sacred place where you’ll meet new friends who know just what you’re facing because they’ve been there too. Here, you’ll experience understanding and comfort. Members are wonderfully supportive and can carry you through both good and bad times.

The group holds in person meetings twice a month, has two facebook support pages (one public and one private) and a private forums page on their website.

Tyler Transgender Support Group meets first Monday and third Thursday of each Month at 7 p.m.
